“The business of college sports has slipped so hard from public favor that all you have to do is mutter “college sports” and everyone just shakes their head, ruefully, in the same way they do when you say “air travel,” or “Wall Street Journal sports columnist.”

So it was inevitable that college sports found their way to Washington, and the White House. This past Friday, in the quitting time of the late afternoon, President Trump convened a “Saving College Sports” panel that featured a Cannonball Run-style roster of politicians, conference leaders, and holy presences like Nick Saban, and Nick Saban’s fabulous hair. The lineup didn’t include any active college athletes, but let’s not get caught up in minutiae, what would college athletes have to offer about any of this.”
