“Private-college presidents saw sharp increases in compensation in 2023, driven in large part by an unusually expensive year of leadership transitions.
Median compensation across the 200 private colleges with the largest expenditures rose 23 percent, from $794,000 in 2022 to $978,000 in 2023, according to a semi-annual Chronicle analysis of executive compensation. Among the top 10 earners in 2023, median pay was 27 percent higher than it was for the top 10 the year before, climbing from $2.6 million to $3.3 million.
