The NCAA DIII women’s tennis team championship tournament began yesterday with five opening-round matches. Twelve other first-round matches are slated for today.

2. Dickinson Stuns #2 Salisbury in OT

Dickinson’s sophomore attackman scored the game-winning goal with 1:09 remaining in overtime as the Red Devils stunned second-ranked Salisbury, 11-10, handing the Sea Gulls their first loss of the season.

Whalen also scored the OT game-winner the previous night in the 8-7 win vs. Denison.

Three other higher-seeded teams fell on Sunday, as #6 York, #7 Wesleyan and #8 Washington and Lee saw their seasons come to a close.

3. Herons Topple #9 Mammoths to Highlight First Weekend

#22 William Smith traveled to Massachusetts and ousted #9 Amherst from the DIII women’s lacrosse tournament with a 13-12 triumph. Kayla Quirk scored four times for the Herons.

One other game was decided in the final seconds, as #13 Salisbury received a goal from Audrey Harrington with :07 left to squeeze past #19 Haverford, 9-8.

» Endowment Tax. “House Republicans are considering a major expansion of taxes on college and university endowments, with some paying exponentially larger tax rates based on a sliding scale of wealth, according to four people granted anonymity to share details of the GOP’s tax package, which is being hammered out privately. Endowments valued at $750,000 or less per student would be taxed at the current 1.4 percent rate on their investment income, according to two of those people. Endowments valued between $750,000 to $1million per student would be taxed at a 10 percent rate and those greater than $1 million per student would be taxed at a 20 percent rate.”
