Top Story

1. History Made

The Violets (20-0) beat Carnegie Mellon 69-58 on Sunday to break a tie with rival Washington University of St. Louis, which won 81 games in a row from 1998-2001.

"Thrilled we beat Wash U for that record," NYU coach Meg Barber said in a phone interview after the victory. "I'm a competitive person and wildly respect this league and to have any type of streak is incredible."

» Court Awareness. “UConn holds the overall NCAA record for consecutive wins with a 111-game streak. The Huskies also have the second-longest streak, a 90-game run.”

» Between The Lines. “Caroline Peper scored 27 points to lead the way for the two-time defending national champions, who had to work hard for Sunday's win. "For us, it was super important that it's NYU we're representing to beat our rival's record," Peper said. Sunday's game was a rematch from a week ago. NYU topped Carnegie Mellon (12-7) by just one point in that game. That had been the closest a team had come to defeating the Violets during this run. No team previously came within 12 points this season.”

» What They’re Saying. "I think it hasn't been the priority, but it's something that we're very excited to represent a D-III record in a really big way," said Barber, who was drenched by her team with water in the locker room after the win. "We didn't win a national championship today. We won a game and are focused on Friday on going 1-0 again. That has been the main priority the whole time."

2. RPI Moves to Dismiss Discrimination Lawsuit Brought By Transgender Sprinter Sadie Schreiner

“Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute is seeking to dismiss a lawsuit brought by a transgender sprinter who claims that the Troy school violated New York state law and discriminated against her by refusing to let her compete at a meet hosted by the school this past April, according to recent court filings.

In documents filed Wednesday in state Supreme Court in Rensselaer County by attorney Suzanne M. Messer, RPI moved to dismiss the suit brought by Sadie Schreiner, a transgender woman who formerly competed for Rochester Institute of Technology. Schreiner’s suit, which was filed in November, alleges that RPI violated the New York Human Rights Law when it barred her from competing in its “Under the Lights Meet” in April 2025 out of “fear” of reprisal from the U.S. Department of Education.”

» Driving The News. “In her lawsuit, Schreiner claimed that by citing a February 2025 executive order by President Donald Trump that threatened to rescind funds from educational institutions that permit transgender athletes to compete in women’s sporting events in its decision to deny Schreiner’s entry in the RPI Under the Lights track meet in April 2025, the school discriminated against her under multiple sections of the New York Human Rights Law.”

» State of Play. “In its response, RPI noted that its decision to deny Schreiner’s entry into women’s events at the meet was based on Trump’s executive order, which in the months following its issuance resulted in the Department of Education initiating investigations into multiple universities.”

» What They’re Saying. “The application of anti-discrimination laws such as Title IX do not turn on frequency. New York State law may not penalize RPI for administering the Invitational in the very manner that federal law requires. That is precisely what the Supremacy Clause forbids.”

3. Kenyon Women, Denison Men Top Final Dual Meet Swim Polls

“The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) has released the final edition of the Division III Top 25 dual meet polls before conference championship season. The Kenyon women and Denison men stayed steady at the top spots of their respective polls.

The committee, consisting of Division III coaches, assesses and ranks the nation’s top 25 dual meet teams. Their evaluation takes into account head-to-head dual meet outcomes, performances since the last rankings, season-long performances, dual meet records, roster changes (such as injuries), and data from the SwimCloud Simulator. It’s important to note that the poll’s objective is not to predict the top finishers in a championship meet format.”

» CSCAA Top 10 (M). 1-Denison, 2-Emory, 3-NYU, 4-Chicago, 5-Kenyon, 6-MIT, 7-Carnegie Mellon, 8-TCNJ, 9-Johns Hopkins, 10-Case Western Reserve
