1. An Open Letter to DIII Students

by NCAA DIII SAAC

"The state of urgency surrounding mental health concerns for student-athletes is palpable on campuses across the country and backed by Association-wide data: The NCAA Student-Athlete Well-Being Survey showed rates of mental exhaustion, anxiety and feeling depressed were comparable in fall 2021 to the beginning of the pandemic.

Mental health struggles can occur with a wide range of severity, depending on the impacted individual. While an individual's mental health status is personal, treatment and support are a community effort. As such, it's encouraging that there has been an increase in support from student-athletes, administrators and athletics staff in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health and dedicating effort to improve support systems.

For the first time in NCAA history, the term "mental health" is included in the NCAA constitution, which all member schools, conferences and divisions have agreed to uphold. This historic inclusion — initiated by SAAC members from each division - displays a strong commitment by the NCAA to its student-athletes' health, safety and well-being."

>> Worth Noting: "We want to challenge campuses around the country to take action and be proactive in implementing the forthcoming recommendations. As change begins to take place, the student-athlete voice should remain involved in all conversations."

2. Deja Vu For USJ's Miller

Men's Basketball Appears In Initial Regional Rankings
by Gavin Keefe, New London Day

"Glen Miller may be having some flashbacks these days.

Back in 1999, Miller was in a very similar place as he is now as head coach of the undefeated and top-ranked University of Saint Joseph men's basketball team.

He guided another Division III program, Connecticut College, to new and unexpected heights. The Camels achieved a No. 1 ranking on the way to an unbeaten regular season (24-0), and their magical run ended with the school's first appearance in the NCAA Division III Final Four.

At 26-0, Saint Joseph opened its postseason journey on Tuesday, defeating Anna Maria, 101-62, in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference tournament first round."

>> Court Awareness: "Miller has continued what he helped Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun, who was hired as the program's first head coach, build. He officially moved from assistant to head coach when Calhoun announced his retirement in 2021."

>> The Key Stat: "The Blue Jays boosted their resume by rolling through the regular season, winning all but three games by double digits, and playing a difficult non-conference schedule that included beating three ranked teams. They're first in the country in scoring margin (25.0) and field goal percentage defense (35.3)."

>> What They're Saying: "What they've done, it's incredible. Really, it is. You're talking about a program that didn't exist five years ago. They've gotten very little attention or accolades, not just for the season that we're having this year, but also for the season they had last year and going into this year."
