"John Gallagher has stepped down as men’s basketball coach at the University of Hartford, some 20 months after leading the Hawks to the NCAA Tournament and less than 36 hours before the start of the 2022-23 season.
Gallagher sent his letter of resignation to university President Gregory Woodward, and addressed his team before making his intentions public Monday afternoon. The resignation won’t end the animus that began when the school’s plans to drop from Division I to Division III became known in April of 2021, but will open a new chapter to be continued in court and arbitration."
>> Court Awareness: "The last straw for Gallagher was the school’s decision not to send an athletic trainer with his team for a closed scrimmage at Dartmouth last week, he said. One player sustained a knee injury and, Gallagher asserts, did not receive sufficient care. Also, Gallagher wrote, the school allegedly denied a credit card application used by the director of basketball operations to buy meals for the team at road games, without an alternative plan."
>> Between The Lines: "This season is to be a transition year, with the school’s athletic programs playing as an independent Division I program, with the D-III move to the Commonwealth Coast Conference coming next season."
>> What They're Saying: "In the current era, enrollment is plummeting, staff morale has never been lower, students are suing the University, and the University is systematically dismantling its athletic programs. Honestly, it has been painful to watch."
