1. Football Helmet Crisis?

Reconditioning

by Doug Samuels, FootballScoop.com

"Coaches across the country are finding themselves about to hit a crisis point in regards to helmets.

Obviously, helmet availability has direct implications to player safety.

From what coaches have shared, a number of helmet reconditionings were taking much longer than the process has been in the past with some helmets sent back at the end of the fall and coaches hadn't gotten them back by the time school was getting out for the summer."

>> Field Awareness: "Riddell shut down orders on at least two of their entry-level helmets (Speed Icon - $369.99 per helmet and Speed Classic Icon - $349.99 per helmet) a few weeks ago, and had a short window for programs to order the SpeedFlex version (sticker price $469.99) before schools essentially had to order the SpeedFlex's with the data tracking (around $550.00) embedded OR their brand new Axiom helmet that requires a custom fitting and carries a $750 price tag per helmet."

>> Why It Matters: "In an industry where there are really two "major" manufacturers (VICIS went bankrupt a few years ago and has since been bought by a New York based investment firm, and Xenith hasn't been immune to ordering issues either), both company's workforce issues and problems at the factory are being felt by a lot of football coaches right now."

>> The Last Word: "For a lot of programs, $500+ per helmet just isn't feasible."

4.  Rowan Considers DI Plans

by Ryan Mulligan, Philadelphia Business Journal

"After 10 years at Rowan University, President Ali Houshmand is looking for the South Jersey university to take major strides in the coming years — in research, in athletics and in development.

In Houshmand's decade leading Rowan, the school's budget has tripled and its student and employee populations have more than doubled. He only wants those numbers to grow in the next 10 years, eyeing an increase in enrollment from the 23,000 students it has right now to a student population of 40,000. He also thinks the school's endowment can grow from its current $342.5 million to well over $1 billion.

Those lofty goals can be attainable by enhancing the school's campus and elevating the public university's status to be a Research 1, Division I institution, Houshmand said."

>> Court Awareness: "One of those could include a new 5,000- to 7,000-seat arena in Glassboro. Houshmand estimates the project would cost about $100 million, and he's looking for outside developers to finance the project. The school's basketball team currently plays in Esbjornson Gymnasium, with a capacity of 1,150."

>> What They're Thinking: "That arena could at some point host Rowan's first sporting events as a Division I school. Houshmand said the school is currently exploring the possibility of elevating its 18 athletic programs from Division III to the NCAA's top athletic division."
