On Sunday night, the task of selecting the remaining teams to the NCAA Division III men's and women's basketball tournaments fall to the respective committees. And on Monday, when the 64-team fields are announced, fans of teams that were omitted from the tourney will cry foul.
We're here to explain the process.
For the 2022 tournaments, there will be 44 teams that receive their conference's automatic qualifier (AQ) and 20 teams selected at-large.
The primary criteria for selection is as follows:
Won-lost percentage against Division III opponents
Division III head-to-head competition
Results versus common Division III opponents
Results versus ranked Division III teams as established by the final ranking and the ranking preceding the final ranking. Conference postseason contests are included.
Division III strength of schedule; - Opponents’ Average Winning Percentage (OWP). - Opponents’ Opponents’ Average Winning Percentage (OOWP).
The strength of schedule is made up of two factors: the opponents’ winning percentage (OWP) and the opponents’ opponents’ winning percentage (OOWP). Click on this link for more on how to calculate the SOS.
Secondary Criteria
If the evaluation of the primary criteria does not result in a decision, the secondary criteria will be reviewed. All the criteria listed will be evaluated (not listed in priority order). The secondary criteria introduce results against all other opponents from other classifications (i.e., provisionals, NAIA, NCAA Divisions I and II).
Non-Division III won-lost percentage
Results versus common non-Division III opponents
Division III non-conference strength-of-schedule.
Additionally, input is provided by regional advisory committees for consideration by the Men’s Basketball Committee.
Regional Rankings Why are the final regional rankings so important? Simple. Team #2 in the region cannot be selected for the field until Team #1 in that region is in.
So, the conference AQs are removed from the rankings for at-large selection purposes. The top team from each region is moved onto "the board" for consideration - 10 teams in all. When a team is selected as an at-large, the next team on the regional list replaces them on the board.
>> The Key Number: Simply put, the SOS is one of the most important numbers to watch on Selection Sunday/Monday. Rarely has a team with an SOS under .500 been selected as an at-large. Historically, the committees have looked askew at gaudy W-L records with a low SOS. So teams in this category probably need to win their conference's AQ to be dancing on Monday.

A WIAC semifinal that feels like a championship fight. The Pioneers (20-4) defeated the Eagles (20-5) twice this season by a combined total of 10 points.
WBB: No. 18 Wartburg vs. Loras, 8 p.m.
The Knights (20-4) and the Duhawks (19-7) square off in an A-R-C semifinal. Wartburg downed Loras by a bucket on the road and needed OT to win at home.
