Athletic trainers (ATs) are health care professionals who provide medical services for active patient populations. From injury prevention and enhanced wellness to rehabilitation and return to activity, ATs are essential to health care in work, life and sport.  ATs provide essential health care services on the field, in the hospital and countless other locations. ATs are experts in injury and illness prevention – in fact, ATs spend nearly 50% of their time providing preventative health care. ATs provide essential health care in times of an emergency, such as sudden cardiac arrest, exertional heat stroke or cervical spine injury. Perhaps one of the most rewarding parts of being an AT is helping an athlete, performer or public servant return to the sport, stage or job they love after sustaining an injury. ATs work collaboratively with other health care professionals to rehabilitate an active patient to work, life and sport.  National Athletic Training Month is provided by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), the professional members association for certified athletic trainers and others who support the athletic training profession. NATA represents more than 45,000 members worldwide. >> Continue Reading   CONFERENCES 2. Champions Last weekend saw a combination of fall and winter sports championship events. Heartland Conference WVB #3 Transylvania (15-1) swept #13 Mount St. Joseph (13-5) in three sets to claim its second straight HCAC championship. Karrington Jackson was named tourney MVP after recording 10 kills and a .667 hitting percentage. Landmark Conference SWIM The Conference held the swim portion of its virtual championships. The Catholic University men and women hold the team leads with diving scheduled for next weekend. Southern Athletic Association XC It was a clean sweep for Centre at the SAA championship meet. The Colonel women posted a perfect score in rolling to its fourth straight SAA title. Amelia Lorrey hit the tape first in 23:22.40. The Centre men also captured the team title. Rhodes' Jared Briant took individual honors in 26:55.20. Upper Midwest Conference T&F Minnesota Morris won its first UMAC women's indoor title, holding off defending champion St. Scholastica. The Cougars swept the throwing events, led by Jessica Bliese who won her third straight shot put gold (13.20m). USA South XC The Conference split its championship into divisional events due to COVID. Methodist won the men's East championship with a perfect score, led by Drew Topoly's 27:19 effort. Meredith captured the women's East crown, while the Monarchs' Makayla Lawler finished first (23:12).   Covenant swept the West Division races. Ben Mellott led the Scot men with a first-place finish in 27:21. Piedmont's Valeria Angel hit the tape first in the women's race, but it was not enough to best the Scot women. Wisconsin WREST UW-La Crosse edged UW-Eau Claire by 7.5 points to capture its fifth straight WIAC team title on Sunday. The Eagles had seven weight-class winners, headed by 165 Grant Zamin, ranked #2 nationally. HOOPS 3. Lion Hearted   Women's Basketball Piedmont 68, #10 Maryville 60 Hope Franklin posted a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds as the Lions remained perfect in USA South action. Piedmont doubled its pleasure with a 76-65 win the next day as well behind 27 points from Livia Skinner (pictured). #13 Wheaton, Ill. 73, North Central, Ill. 58 Annie Tate led the Thunder (11-1) with 33 points and 14 rebounds.   Men's Basketball North Park 76, #2 Illinois Wesleyan 74 Mike Osborne scored with 2.2 seconds left to lift Vikings (3-10) past the Titans.  Bethel 81, #5 Saint John's 55 The Royals won in Collegeville for the first time since 2009. Isaiah Carver-Bagley led the way with 22 points. Mary Hardin-Baylor 105, Concordia Texas 76 Josiah Johnson tied the school single-game record with 53 points as the Cru (14-3) won its 11th straight game. New England College 121, NVU-Lyndon 93 Peyton Olsen scored 50 points for the Hornets in a losing cause. RECAP 4. Weekend Stars Wrestling Top-ranked Wartburg turned away #7 North Central, 24-13. Zane Mulder and Kyle Briggs posted wins to finish the regular season unbeaten.   Messiah handed Averett its first loss of the season, 24-21. Trailing 15-12 after six bouts, the Falcons got three straight wins - a fall from Brian Shermeyer and decisions from Dan Swarr and David Stevens - for the victory. Baseball Congratulations to Methodist coach Tom Austin who won the 1,200th game of his career when the Monarchs defeated Hampden-Sydney, 4-2.   Wartburg produced a three-spot in the top of the ninth to break a 2-2 tie and defeat #10 Webster, 5-3. William Armstrong's two-run double provided the margin of difference. Softball #4 Virginia Wesleyan (6-0) took a pair of games from #3 Christopher Newport, 2-0 and 11-8, in an early-season showdown of national contenders.  Men's Lacrosse Brady Altobello had three goals and an assist as #13 Christopher Newport topped Hampden-Sydney, 16-10. Women's Lacrosse #7 Salisbury received a five-goal performance from Erin Scannell in an 18-15 road win at Shenandoah.
